GearEssentials

It is St. Patrick’s Day! By now you are likely stumbling home wishing you could gag half the people you were partying with. One more Irish lullaby or joke about your shillelagh (sorry, guilty here) and you might just kill someone.

That got me to thinking about ball gags. About a month ago we started to expand our product line into more bondage gear. While I have been tied down (yes, it was amazing) I have never been gagged (not that there haven’t been many times when someone has wanted to gag me!)

So I find this concept really intriguing—and once again, am looking for our GearFans to help educate me. I also want to add that I have learned not to judge something until I’ve tried it. So many of my prejudices have been incredibly stupid and I’ve had many over-the-top sexual experiences when I’ve let them go. I may be wearing a gag yet!

This is what I have discovered: a gag is some kind of device (it could be the ball gag picture in the bottom picture, a handkerchief/bandana or duct tape as pictured immediately below) that is worn in or over the mouth to prevent talking or engaging in any kind of oral sex. It is most often worn during sexual bondage and BDSM (bondage and sadomasochism). [I found it interesting that the term BDSM only dates back to 1969 (that was quite a year). What did folks who were into role-playing or dominant/submissive play call it? Sadism is traced back to the Marquis de Sade, a well-known French ‘libertine’ and author from the late 1700’s. He played a wide field that included men, women, prostitutes, employees and his wife’s sister!] The person wearing the gag is considered the submissive; the one not wearing it is the dominant.

Sadly (for those of you who are hoping to shut me up) a gag does not silence someone completely.

Why Wear a Gag?

I suspect there are as many reasons for wearing ball gags as there are people who wear them. We all are turned on by different things—how else can we explain the diversity of fetishes? Some people get a huge erotic kick from wearing a gag as the submissive—or conversely seeing their partner gagged (in the dominant role). When role-playing, wearing a ball gag while being restrained can increase the submissive’s feeling of helplessness. This can actually be a very freeing experience because you have no choice but to just relax, let go and enjoy the ride—without any self-judgment or shame. For many a recovering ‘fundy’ this is an extremely liberating experience. In fact, many professionals who work in very authoritative positions get off on being dominated by others. Finally they don’t have to think or be in control. (That can be exhausting.) In addition, you have no verbal way to communicate your desires to your partner(s). You have to surrender.

A gag can also be used for humiliation. This is true of those who willingly submit to being gagged without any ropes or straps. They have willingly surrendered their voice.

When wearing a gag, you cannot articulate words. As I mentioned above, the sub can still grunt, moan or other noises. Some doms are turned on by these ‘uncivilized’ sounds. The site of the sub drooling can be sexually stimulating as well.

Playing It Safe

There are risks involved to wearing a ball gag. As with any bondage play, a safe word (or grunt—such as making a grunt five times in a row or grunting out the Morse Code for S-O-S) should be agreed upon before play commences.

Be aware of the following concerns:

Don’t block the sub’s nose. This could involve asphyxia (not getting enough oxygen). No oxygen is bad and means that the play will end. Forever.

If the submissive is sick with allergies, cold or flu, skip gag play for another day. Any condition that makes it difficult to breathe is only exacerbated by wearing a gag.

Excessive drinking leading to vomiting could be an issue. The sub could very easily choke to death in this way. (Sorry, there is no nice way to say this.) Therefore never leave someone with a gag alone.
