GearEssentials

A buddy of mine just posted a link to an article about the aging penis. Oh, no! Really?!

(You can bet we will be doing a blog about this!)

One of the things I've noticed is that time does march on. We are all getting older. Even if you don't feel older you sure ain't as young as you were yesterday! This passage of time as well as all of the things we do to our bodies (drugs, smoking, drinking, soft drinks, fatty foods, going without sleep, etc.) takes a toll. What can we do to reverse some of the impact of getting a bit older?

I am not the only one thinking about this. I received the following e-mail a few days ago:  "Hey Jay, How's it going? Did u have a good holiday?  I am 45 years old and have to admit that I get horny at least once a day. My question is concerning the Swiss Navy Triple X Testosterone Booster. Does it contain caffeine? Are u going to continue to carry it? I am asking cuz I don't want to start getting something and then they stop carrying/selling that product, and then I have to go to another product and get used to that. I have a lot of allergies and once I know something works I hate having to switch. I also want to know if there are any steroids in this product. I get random drug tests at work and don't want that showing up. Tho I don't think I would get fired for that.  Thanks, Brant"

Because of this, I started researching ways we can boost testosterone as we age. A lot of health stores are now carrying these products so I was excited when M. D. Science (maker of Triple X Testosterone Booster) let us know that they were manufacturing one too. We just started carrying it and frankly, the bottom line is the concern many of us have that we need to start supplementing our testosterone. I have really grown to trust and enjoy M. D. Science's products and when possible, I prefer to go the 'natural' route so this product appealed to me in that regard as well.

I am putting my money where my mouth is--literally! I am testing the Triple X on myself. I started taking this about a week ago and while any product like this takes some time to start working, I can already feel a difference. My energy levels are up and I feel hornier and last longer during sex. I am also finding that my mood is also better--more positive. I have been working hard to lose some holiday pounds and it seems to be going more quickly.

On the flip side, I have a sensitive stomach so I quickly learned that I need to take this with a meal to avoid any problems. I'm also not particularly fond of the taste. But this seems a small price to pay for the increase in energy, positive attitude, endurance and yup, SEX DRIVE!

Here's my reply to Brant:  So…the Triple X! Interesting that you e-mailed me about this. I just started taking it a few days ago. I’m in a similar situation as you and a lot of the guys I know are taking testosterone. I have done a lot of research on GNC’s products and others but we have really grown to trust and like M. D. Science’s products. I figured we should give this a whirl.

Here’s what I’ve discovered about the contents (there’s a lot of info here so it might put you to sleep!):

ZINC

Zinc is a pretty typical supplement especially for fighting colds. It is also recommended for fighting cancer, healing wounds more quickly, treating acne, positively impacting memory and learning as well as stimulating enzymes.

L-GLUTAMINE

When I was working out hard, I took L-Glutamine because it assists with muscle growth. (When you have a really tough work out this amino acid can be depleted and then muscle wasting can occur. Taking it reduces the recovery period.) It is an amino acid (they make up 61% of our skeletal tissue). It can also substantially increase the levels of naturally occurring Human Growth Hormone (HGH) which speeds up metabolism of fats—so it improves fat reduction and building lean muscle.  It also has been shown to reduce Diverticulitis (a common condition for those over 40). Those taking it reduce the severity and frequency which reduces the risk of colon cancer. It also boosts the overall immune system in your digestive system.  L-Glutamine also has been found to improve concentration levels, reduce stress (provide calming), increase alertness and improve low mental and physical energy levels. An interesting side effect is that it reduces cravings for alcohol and sugar which helps stabilize blood sugar levels. This is good because it reduces our body’s draw upon our muscle mass to maintain blood sugar levels when we have low calorie intake or strenuous exercise. Weight loss is a fringe benefit!

Side effects of L-Glutamine are low because we have so much of this in our bodies already.

L-ARGININE

L-Arginine is one of 20 amino acids we get from proteins. It converts into nitric oxide which helps blood vessels relax and expand thereby regulating blood flow. Because of this it has been used to help treat erectile dysfunction. It has been known to help men with mild to moderate ED conditions. A recent Chinese study demonstrated that it has a positive effect on immune system regulation. When taken before a work out, it increases the time it takes you to get to exhaustion—meaning you can work out longer before you hit muscle failure.

L-LYSINE

L-Lysine is an essential amino acid—our bodies don’t make it but it’s important for growth. It is a building block of protein so it helps us grow, produce carnitine (which converts fatty acids into energy and lowers cholesterol) and absorbs calcium and collagen.

TESTOFEN

Testofen seems to be a key to the testosterone boost.  According to the University of Maryland, studies have shown that it increases testosterone production. It can have slight side effects including gastrointestinal issues (diarrhea, bloating, etc.), coughing, lowering blood sugar (so if you are diabetic, be careful to monitor your sugar levels), gynecomastia (enlargement of breast tissue) and decreased sperm production. It can also increase the growth of body and facial hair! (It's probably good to insert here that you might want to check with your doctor before starting on Triple X--particularly if you have diabetes or heart issues.)

The bottom line is that it is considered safe and an effective testosterone boosting supplement. Swiss Navy has also added ingredients to balance out some of the potential side effects.

TRIBULUS TERRESTRIS

Tribulus terrestris is a herb from Ayurveda that is mostly recommended for male health including virility and vitality. It is most focused on cardiovascular and urogenital health. It is a common supplement for its libido-enhancing properties and testosterone boosting properties.

When it comes to boosting our sex drive (according to Examine.com) tribulus does appear to be a relatively reliable and potent libido enhancer in lab rats. The one lone human study assessing this has confirmed an increase in sexual well-being and erectile function. While it is not exactly known how tribulus works, it is known to enhance androgen receptor density in the brain (muscle tissue not confirmed) which may enhance the libido enhancing properties of androgens.

EURYCOMA LONGIFOLA

This is the herb name for what is more commonly known as Malaysian Ginseng, Tongkat Ali or Longjack. The aphrodisiac effects of Eurycoma are really quite reliable (again, according to Examine.com). In addition to the aphrodisiac effects, Eurycoma can also increase sperm production and may directly act as a pro-erectile agent. At least one molecule in Eurycoma (9-hydroxycanthin-6-one) is associated with both a delay in ejaculation as well as pro-erectile properties (although the efficiency of this molecule to act via consuming Eurycoma extract is not known).

Hormonally, Eurycoma appears to have remarkable anti-estrogenic effects in vitro and has a potency similar to Tamoxifen. While this is promising, we should be aware that no human studies yet exist on it or studies assessing oral intake of Eurycoma Extract. On the testosterone side of things, the literature appears to be promising.

AVENA SATIVA

According to herbwisdom.com, Avena Sativa (also known as Oatstraw) counteracts feelings of stress, tiredness, depression and a lack of sexual desire. It is believed that this herb soothes the brain and nervous system while simultaneously boosting sexual desire and performance.

Avena has become a popular natural alternative to pharmaceutical erection enhancers without the dangerous side effects. Also known as Oats Milky Seed or Oatstraw, Avena Sativa is used to stimulate both men and women quickly and effectively. It is often described as the "Natural Viagra."

It also appears to be effective for treating impotence and premature ejaculation, probably due to an increase in healthy blood flow.

Avena sativa is used as a nervous system general tonic as well as a general health tonic. It has no known side effects, unlike some sexual prescription drugs on the market today.

SAW PALMETTO

According to the U. S. National Library of Medicine, saw palmetto is best known for (and best supported by scientific studies) reducing symptoms of enlarged prostate. It is also used to enhance sexual drive. Some users have also reported that it reverses male pattern baldness. It is most effective when used in conjunction with other herbs and supplements.

BETA-SITOSTEROL

Life Extension Magazine did an article on Beta-Sitosterol. In it they discussed how this plant extract improves urinary symptoms related to prostate enlargement.

BIOPERINE

According to a LiveStrong.com article, Piperine, also known by its trademarked name, BioPerine, is an extract derived from black pepper, Piper Nigrum L, and long pepper, Piper longum L. Piperine is what gives peppers their spicy taste. This extract is marketed as a nutritional supplement and has been found to increase the absorption of a variety of nutrients. Though some of the benefits of Piperine have yet to be firmly established, it may also have immune-suppressing, tumor-inhibiting and anti-depressant effects.
